This unique project presented many technical obstacles. Working on one of the largest restricted access Naval bases in the world, security was key. Timing was critical: How could we ensure that all nine positions would be measured at the exact same instant? Site obstructions prevented clear lines of sight from the ground to the ship’s deck, eight stories up. Equipment being used to dry dock the ship might prevent accurate measurements.

Ultimately, our project methodology was successful. Results showed that the ship hogged close to 12 inches over 950 feet between a floating state and resting on construction blocks. The data assisted in determining corrective measures to align the drive shafts to prevent seizure while under sail.
